Into the Fire

Thank you for those who actually care about what I think or have to say. What a blessing.

By this time almost every possible topic on Christian fiction has been covered one way or another, but I’m reminded of a conversation I had several months ago with a writer pursuing publication. He’s a favorite of many bloggers and, of course, he has his own blog. The thing that stuck in my mind which he was questioning in regard to publishers/editors/younameit was “common sense”. In his thoughtful opinion it was lacking, if not missing, from the process of selection. His work was being considered by a couple of editors, and he was not enjoying the particular questions about the project without the desire to read his work to see them answered.
This business is about reading. How is it that it has become about the “first 5 pages” or the “first 20 pages”? What happened to investing in a novel, lingering over the plot, the characters, the theme? “If it doesn’t grab me in the first few pages, I’m outa there.” Wow. You know what? You might as well read the back cover copy anymore and call it done. The entire story is exposed there, so what’s the point of reading the entire book since we’re supposed to be way too busy to read?
