Into the Fire

Passionate thoughts about the world of writing and the Power of God

Melinda Leigh's latest What I've Done takes a familiar subject and makes it her own. This mystery/thriller returns us to Lincoln Sharp of Sharp Investigations, his right hand man Lance Krueger, and from prosecutor to the "dark side" defense attorney Morgan Dane. These three characters are interesting, very likeable, smart, savvy, and still vulnerable at times. Sharp's former cop instincts bode well for his P.I. business along with Lance's former cop experience and brawn joined with Morgan's legal know-how and boldness, and, having been the daughter and granddaughter of cops, she can hold her own with a gun. This is a very good series with quality character development, striking individuals easy to warm up to, wicked antagonists, many suspects, and complex stories.

Beginning with a naked girl covered in blood searching for the source of that blood, followed by an arrest, an old treasured friend of Sharp's, an "enemy" reporter, Lance's mother's help with her amazing computer skills, Morgan's concussion, haunting nightmares, and two terrible fires, What I've Done presents a difficult investigation with few breaks until . . . the truth is exposed in a most unlikely way.

This is a great story – the love between Morgan and Lance gets real, Sharp ultimately fulfills a promise he made years before this case, and a satisfying conclusion ties up loose ends and adds commitments. Morgan's grandfather, her three daughters, and Lance's mom always provide serious moments, amusement, and peripheral entertainment while keeping the main characters in focus. Although there is some profanity, it's not overwhelming. There's even a tiny hint of faith although obscure. Good series.

Father, please continue to bless Melinda with your grace and provision and give her the stories you have for her to tell. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

  •      Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such "wisdom" does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.

Five frivolous things that make me cry (as opposed to genuinely sad/sorrowful/moving things):

Some of the old Hallmark card commercials

    Sentimental photos/commercials

    Compliments on my writing/novels

    Messages on some greeting cards

Touching endings in novels, TV series, films

No question I'm a sap. Just a very emotional female.

Father, thank you for making me feel deep. It's not ideal at times, but it's who I am. I'm desperate for you, Lord. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

Kyle Mills has done a remarkable job of continuing Vince Flynn's legendary character Mitch Rapp. It's tough to wait a year for each segment, but a review will be posted soon on the latest Mitch Rapp dangerous always life and death adventure. It's a series you hope will never end . . .

Father, please bless Kyle for all he's done to capture Vince Flynn's legacy. Encourage him and show him who you are in everything. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

A little touch of psychedelic blues from The Blues Project. This is a haunting melody.

Father, we're all desperate for you – even when we're unaware of it or worse don't think we are. Help us all to know you more. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

40 (+) years together! We made it, baby! Happy 40th Anniversary, Michael. Love you forever.

Apart from you, God, we can do nothing. Thank you for rescuing us and keeping us together. It's all you, Lord. As always: thank you is never enough. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

Okay, favorite five male characters of older/past TV series:

    1. Going way back to "Mark McCain" played by Johnny Crawford in The Rifleman.

    2. "Asst. Inspector Steve Keller" played by Michael Douglas in The Streets of San Francisco.

    3. "Stoney Burke" played by Jack Lord (in Stoney Burke) and "Detective Captain Steve McGarrett" in the original Hawaii Five-0.

4." Sgt. Rick Hunter" played by Fred Dryer in Hunter.

    5. "Thomas Magnum" played by Tom Selleck in Magnum, P. I.. (And I loved John Hillerman as "Higgins".)

How 'bout you? Remember to go back in time to pick your favorites of a different era.

Father, thank you again for the vast talents you disperse. May each one know the One who gave them theirs. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

Over the years I've read some amazing mysteries, thrillers, and suspense novels with fascinating and complex plots, but no one does "complex" like Master Storyteller Steven James. This new release is added to the prequels in The Bowers Files prior to the beginning of The Pawn, the first book of this series which began as A Patrick Bowers Thriller.

A Wicked Man introduces us to a young novelist Timothy Sabian who hears voices and feels bugs crawling all over his arms and stomach, and recalls Blake Neeson, a ruthless criminal psychopath who's managed to escape capture and prosecution for his multiple and international crimes.

When a website streams the bizarre suicides of people, one of whom is a local senator's son, the FBI gets involved.

There's a female DEA agent undercover as an escort cozying up to Blake and his "silent ladies" mannequins, a huge man named Mannie who assists Blake with details, a jihadist who believes Blake and he are on the same mission, an Arizona drug maker providing a lethal combination of drugs for Blake's project, a tic-tac-toe code for Patrick to figure out, and a nose-less man. Add to that a bizarre association for Patrick's stepdaughter Tessa with Timothy Sabian at a book signing, a mystery someone who doesn't fit, Dr. Werjonic (Patrick's mentor), and you have just a smattering of characters that somehow are uniquely knit together.

It's a story of unabated evil (and Steven does evil so well), mental illness, sorrows, love, betrayal, unbearable loss, and victory. You won't be bored, but you might experience a little confusion here and there piecing it all together.

The Pawn picks up after the death of Patrick's wife. Every Wicked Man lets us in on the points preceding it, facing it, and its aftermath which will make your heart ache.

Father, please continue to bless Steven's incredible gift. Keep him safe from all harm and fill him with your abundance. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.
